Probably the most fulfilling part of the work is helping clients achieve their goals, especially where I’ve known a client since the early part of their business life. Seeing a business flourish and that being the means by which the client can achieve personal and professional ambitions, without paying too much tax, is a real fillip.
Football (Chelsea & Bedford Town), Rugby (Bedford Blues, Leicester Tigers & England), Cricket (England & Sussex), a wide-range of music, word-play, the intellectual challenge of tax and problem solving.
On Monday mornings, the intellectual challenge of tax, the relentless march of time when there’s still so much to do, especially noticed when stuck in traffic.
Watching sport and attending concerts – see likes. Participating in and writing quizzes. Low level participation in sport – walking football, running & cycling to the extent that creaking joints allow. I’m a trustee of the Bedfordshire Music Trust, which gives children and young adults in the local area the opportunity to play in musical ensembles of a size and/or standard that they don’t have within their individual schools and colleges.
Fulham Broadway? No, too specific! London, that’s probably truer, as I keep going back there.
I’m tax partner at UHY Hacker Young, with a particular interest in corporate and employment taxes, although VAT also seems to take up an increasing amount of the working day. I act as a resource for the Recruitment team when it comes to odd or unusual situations where the tax effects are uncertain or where there are options that could give different tax outcomes. I also feed into the strategic planning that’s carried out by Marie and Stuart, informing them of where there may be tax reliefs or charges in clients’ plans and suggesting possible alternatives that could result in less tax. I’m also involved with the Beds, Buck & Herts Society of Chartered Accountants, of which I’m President for 2018-19.
